Labor Day Weekend Baby Outfit Ideas
Labor Day weekend is the calendar's polite way of saying summer is packing its bags. The pool is still open, technically, but the mornings have a little bite to them and the light goes gold by five. It's a strange in-between stretch to dress a baby for, which is exactly why we like it.
Dress for Two Seasons at Once
The whole trick to a good labor day baby outfit is accepting that you will be peeling and re-adding layers all day. A warm noon, a cool lakeside evening, an over-air-conditioned car in between. Rather than fight it, build the outfit in pieces you can add and subtract without a full costume change on a picnic blanket.
Our favorite base for this weekend is a short romper for the sunny middle of the day, with a light hoodie stashed in the bag for when the breeze turns. If your plans lean cooler or run late, a long romper covers the legs without committing to full winter mode.

This weekend tends to produce a lot of photos, the unofficial last hurrah of summer. You don't need a themed getup to make them good. A clean, well-fitting romper in a color you actually like beats a stiff outfit your baby is visibly plotting against. Comfortable babies smile more, and smiling babies photograph better. That's the entire secret.
If you're near water or a chilly evening bonfire, resist the urge to add a bulky jacket in the car seat. Thick layers under a harness can keep the straps from sitting snugly against your baby, so dress light underneath and lay a blanket over the top of the buckled harness once they're strapped in.
What to Actually Pack
Our short list for a low-stress holiday weekend: two outfits, one warm layer, a hat, a backup for the backup, and a blanket that can double as a shade, a picnic surface, or a car-seat cover-up. Everything else is negotiable.
